I figure that life is too short to read depressing arty novels. I read for pleasure. This one gave me a lot of pleasure and brightened my reading year no end. Isabel Allende was commissioned to write a novel about the early career of the swashbuckling hero of dozens of movies and books, and she appears to have had a ball doing it.
